There are some specific Arizona state veteran benefits that can be claimed. Here we’ll review all the benefits that are available for veterans in Arizona and how to claim them.

Read on to find out more.

Arizona State Veterans Home

There are two veteran’s homes in Arizona, one in Phoenix and the other in Tucson. These homes are nursing facilities, and a veteran must be honorably discharged and need advanced nursing care to qualify.

Arizona Veteran Financial Benefits

There are many financial benefits to being a veteran in Arizona. They include:

Income Tax

Veterans don’t pay any tax on the money they earn while on active duty. Additionally, any federal payments such as Civil Service, Military Retirement, and SBP are tax-free.

Arizona Military Family Relief Fund

This fund provides financial help for the families of anyone that is deployed. They also payout to families that suffer hardships due to military service. If applicants have an emergency situation, they can apply for a grant of up to $3000. There is a lifetime limit of $20,000 for this emergency grant.

Vehicle License Tax and Registration Fees

Anyone that suffers a 100% service-connected disability doesn’t have to pay any vehicle registration or tax fees on their personally owned vehicles. A surviving spouse can also claim this benefit until they remarry.

Property Tax

Some veterans will be exempt from paying some or all of their property tax. However, it varies from veteran to veteran. A veteran can contact their local county assessor for an assessment.

Arizona Veterans Tuition Waiver Program

Veterans and surviving dependents can get help claiming education tuition. They can get educated up to Bachelor’s degree level at any Arizona public state university or community college.

However, there are strict criteria for applying to get this free tuition.

Eligible people are spouses (that haven’t remarried) or dependants of Arizona National Guard members that were killed in the line of duty. Anyone that received a Purple Heart after 9/11 and is still a member of the National Guard can also apply.

Finally, any veteran discharged from the Arizona National Guard for medical reasons can apply for this fee waiver.

Arizona Veteran Employment Benefits

Getting vets back to work isn’t always easy, as they’re often left with crippling physical and mental disabilities. There are several benefits set up by Arizona state to help vets get back to work.

Hiring Preference

Veterans that pass the employment examination can have five preferential points added to their score if they served for longer than six months and were discharged honorably.

Any discharged veterans that receive disability compensation can claim ten additional points.

Veteran Tool Kit

The Veteran Tool Kit helps unemployed veterans get set up for finding work. They help with practical supplies such as boots, tools, and bicycles to interview preparation skills.

Anyone wishing to claim these veteran benefits must live in Arizona and register with Arizona Job Connection.

CDL Skills Test Waiver

Any veterans that drove a commercial motor vehicle for a minimum of two years before they were discharged may not need to take the commercial driver’s license skills test. This varies depending on which vehicle they drove and for how long, but any veteran can apply.

Real Estate Licensing

One of the lesser-known vet benefits is the reduced real estate licensing requirements for spouses of military members. Contact your local veteran advisor for more advice about this benefit.

Arizona Veteran Education Benefits

The Arizona Purple Heart Tuition Waiver is a scholarship available to certain veterans.

Any veterans or guard members that served post 9/11 that have a 50% disability, a Purple Heart medal, or were medically discharged can apply for this scholarship. They must have been stationed in Arizona during their service.

Additionally, the dependent children of any military members killed in the line of duty after 9/11 can apply.

Recreational Benefits: Hunting and Fishing

A popular veteran benefit in Arizona is the discounted hunting and fishing licenses. Active duty members stationed in Arizona can obtain a permit at the regular resident rate.

For those that are 100% disabled, licenses are free.

Recreational Benefits: Arizona State Parks

Veterans in Arizona can get discounted entry to state parks. Active duty, guard, resident military retirees, disabled military, and reserve military members can claim a 50% day pass.

100% disabled service-connected veterans are granted free day passes.

Arizona Veteran Cemeteries

There are three cemeteries for veterans in Arizona. They are located in Camp Navajo, Marana, and Sierra Vista.

Any veteran that isn’t dishonorably discharged qualifies for burial at one of these cemeteries. This vet benefit allows service members to be buried for free and a small one-time fee for spouses and dependents.
